The mystery

The wreck is the MV Panagiotis, beached in 1980. The most repeated story: a smuggling boat chased by the Greek Navy in a storm. Locals also tell it as a simple storm wreck, no chase. No official record settles it. 45 years later, the sea keeps the story better than the guides do.

Why you can’t land there anymore

The cliffs above the cove have been failing. A 2018 rockfall first restricted access. The 2022 earthquake made it worse. A fatal fall in June 2026 confirmed it’s not just red tape. Landing and swimming stay closed through October 31, 2026.

If a tour still promises a stop on the beach, that listing is outdated.

How to actually see it

• Clifftop viewpoint — free, short walk, the classic postcard shot from above.
• Boat pass-by — gets within 50m of the cove, no landing. Currently the only way to see it from the water.

Anyone offering more than that isn’t being honest with you.

Day 1 — Positano

Arrive by boat if you can, or by car if you must — either way, choose where you stay carefully. A room low near Spiaggia Grande puts you in the middle of the crowd; a room higher on the cliff costs you a few more steps but gives you the view everyone else is fighting for.

Spend the afternoon wandering up toward the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta and its majolica-tiled dome, then let the evening slow down on a terrace facing the water for golden hour — that’s the hour Positano is actually built for.

If you’d rather not wander blind, a local guide gets you past the postcard spots — down to Fornillo Beach, through the ceramic workshops tourists walk right by, and ending at one of the town’s best pastry shops.

Day 2 — By Boat: Furore and Amalfi

This is the day that makes the whole trip worth it. Skip the public ferry and the coastal road entirely — book a private boat day instead, and you reach coves and grottoes that most visitors never see: the Fiordo di Furore, tucked into a narrow cliff gorge, and the Grotta dello Smeraldo, lit an impossible green from below the waterline.

Amalfi itself only needs about an hour — the Duomo di Sant’Andrea and a coffee on the piazza are enough before heading back out on the water, where the real experience of this coast actually is.

Day 3 — Ravello and Atrani

Ravello sits high above the coast, and it earns the climb. The Terrazza dell’Infinito at Villa Cimbrone is, without exaggeration, the best view on the entire Amalfi Coast — and far quieter than anything in Positano. Follow it with the gardens at Villa Rufolo and a slow lunch on the Piazza Duomo.

A private guide meeting you right at the Piazza Duomo makes the most of the two hours — walking you through both villa gardens rather than leaving you to find the entrances yourself.

To close the trip, walk down to Atrani — the smallest village on the coast, five minutes from Amalfi, that nine out of ten visitors never see. One piazza, no crowds, all the charm the coast is famous for.

Before You Go

Skip July and August if your schedule allows it — May, June, and September give you the same light with half the people. The coastal road (SS163) is beautiful but slow; between villages, a boat is almost always the faster option. And in high season, book your boat and your restaurants ahead — the coast is narrow, and space is limited.
